Laparoscopic and Robotic Ureteral Reimplantation for Vesicoureteral Reflux

The development of laparoscopy is an important advance in surgery. Since the beginning of this century, it has evolved to become the standard approach to several operations, replacing open procedures because of its less invasive nature. Following successful animal laparoscopic reimplantation several studies utilizing different modifications of laparoscopic reimplantation in humans were published showing results similar to the open reimplantation. However, the main drawback has been the relatively steep learning curve for this procedure because of technical difficulties in suturing and anastomosis. With Robot Assisted-Surgery (RAS) it is possible to overcome many impediments of conventional laparoscopic surgery and to reduce the learning curve for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), especially for pediatric reconstructive procedures. An ergonomic advantage to the surgeon and extra freedom in suturing deep within the pelvic cavity, make RAS very attractive for reconstructive surgery. Relatively easier learning curve with robotic surgery and similar to laparoscopic surgery manual skills with speed increase of robotic platforms in medical centers around the world together with similar to laparoscopic and open surgery complications rate will make this approach a gold standard for pediatric reimplantation in VUR patients.
