Perspectives on News Agency of Nigeria
摘要
This chapter centres on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), which was established in 1976, to play a pivotal role in the country’s information architecture, and tasked with providing accurate, timely and objective news to both domestic and international audiences. The chapter presents NAN’s historical development, institutional role and impact on Nigeria’s media landscape, the agency’s mandate as a government-owned entity and its efforts to balance state interests with journalistic integrity. It also examines NAN’s contributions to national development through its developmental journalism, as well as its challenges, including funding constraints, digital transformation, and competition from private and international news outlets. It also highlights both achievements and limitations, which provides an understanding of the News Agency of Nigeria’s relevance in shaping informed discourse and national identity.
