The political history of Nigeria is marked by a complex trajectory of colonial legacy, nationalist movements, military rule and democratic transitions. The chapter interrogates the factors of heterogeneity and homogeneity in the political system of pre-colonial Nigeria, the impact of colonial rule, political and administrative history of Nigeria, her demographic and linguistic characteristics, educational facilities, communication infrastructures and technology. It traces the evolution of Nigeria’s political development from pre-colonial indigenous governance systems through British colonial administration, to the attainment of independence in 1960. It examines the turbulent post-independence period characterized by civil war, successive military coups and authoritarian regimes, which profoundly shaped the nation’s political landscape. The return to democratic rule in 1999 marked a pivotal moment, ushering in a Fourth Republic that continues to grapple with issues of corruption, ethno-religious tensions, electoral integrity and governance reform. The chapter analyses the interplay of internal dynamics and external influences in Nigeria’s political journey, highlighting both the challenges and prospects for sustainable democratic governance in the country.

摘要
