The aim of this chapter is to discuss the adverse consequences of deforestation on the Himalayan ecosystem and propose viable solutions promoting long-term conservation. It is worth noting that the Himalaya is an important natural resource for biodiversity, water supply, and climate regulation. On the other hand, environmental concerns are being raised due to widespread deforestation, climate change, and unplanned development programs. This chapter presents the theoretical background and motivation for investigating the emergence of ecological health maintenance in this region for minimizing the occurrence of natural disasters, protecting biodiversity, and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people. The methodology combines literature reviews of successful conservation programs and assessments of environmental policies. In particular, reforestation and sustainable forest management are the community-driven approaches that have been especially emphasized. Rearing practices like pastoralism and livestock management, belief in sacred sites, local knowledge of agrobiodiversity, nutrient cycling (e.g., composting and crop rotation), uses of ethnobotanical knowledge, and community involvement are the traditional ecological knowledges (TEKs) that help to restore the biodiversity, enhance soil fertility, and amplify fodder production. Building on this, this chapter discusses the potential application of biogas plants as a sustainable fuel source empowering local women (reduction of time spent gathering firewood: 15 h/month) and reducing loads on forests (greenhouse gas emissions reduction: 1938.6 kg/year CO2e; firewood usage reduction by 5%). Not only does this chapter provide efficient access to the long-standing challenges for implementing comprehensive rules and carrying capacity monitoring, but it also introduces collaboration among government agencies, local communities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for developing policies promoting sustainable development. In the quest for environmental sustainability, future studies should focus on climate resilience and devising measures that can reconcile human growth with ecological preservation.
