Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Indian Hilly Regions and Geospatial Applications
摘要
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) pose significant risks to life and property in the Indian Himalayan region. This chapter delves into the increasing issue of GLOFs, exploring their causes, consequences, and the essential function of geospatial technologies in reducing their impacts. We examine how remote sensing, GIS, and GPS are utilized for Monitoring glacial lake dynamics: Observing changes in lake size, volume, and water levels; assessing risk: Identifying potentially hazardous lakes and mapping areas at risk of flooding. Developing early warning systems: Facilitating real-time monitoring and prompt alerts for affected communities and Informing mitigation strategies: Assisting in designing and implementing drainage systems, early warning measures, and community-based disaster risk reduction initiatives. This chapter underscores the vital importance of geospatial technologies in deepening our understanding of GLOFs and aiding informed decision-making for their mitigation and adaptation in the Indian Himalayas.
