Mapping Landslide Potential and Assessing Susceptibility in the Darjiling Himalaya Using GIS and Bivariate Statistics

The northern West Bengali districts of Darjiling and Kalimpong are located in the Darjiling Himalayas, which have been a landslide hotspot for centuries. The landslide risk is rising here due to unstable geological conditions, high rainfall, and the unskilled urbanization of the hill slopes near the fault. This article uses remote sensing, GIS, and bivariate statistical analysis (FR technique) to investigate the potential for future landslide disasters in the Darjiling Himalayas by identifying locations based on landslide susceptibility blocks. We used Arc GIS software to construct twelve factor and thematic layers to analyse remotely sensed and ground data. The all-thematic layer weights were estimated using the FR model to assess the region’s landslide vulnerability. A landslide susceptibility map was created by combining the weights of all factor and theme layers using ArcGIS software. The study area is divided into five groups based on landslide susceptibility. The most vulnerable are Kalimpong II, Kurseong, Garubathan, Kalimpong I, and Darjiling-Pulbazar blocks in the Darjiling and Kalimpong districts. We evaluated the research field’s ROC curve technique with a 95% level of correctness. Locating areas likely to experience landslides requires a more comprehensive approach, which this paper explores.
