A key part of any successful career is determining the right time to finish. While some faculty members will never retire, most grapple with choosing the best time to complete their work and explore new activities. It is worthwhile to take time periodically for self-reflection and determine if you are continuing to get personal satisfaction from your job. It is also important to evaluate your current activities and contributions to your institution and to your field. You may find that there are other things that you may want to do now more than continuing to work as a faculty member. Timing your retirement also depends upon your financial situation and the status of your health (or that of family members). You also should consider the best time for your retirement from the perspective of your institution and colleagues. Discussion with mentors and peers can give you insights, but ultimately this is a very personal decision. If you are considering retirement, be sure to understand what social, community, and other activities you plan to pursue, and to involve your family and friends in this significant life decision.
