As your career progresses, it is expected that you will continually be considering, developing, evaluating, and embracing additional professional career opportunities. In addition to positions in academic medicine, your career journey may lead you to consider activities in business/industry, government, foundations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and more. You should remember that jobs outside your academic health center/academic medical center (AHC/AMC) are likely to involve a different culture and network of colleagues, as well as different skills and expectations than for your current position. Part-time or consulting positions on advisory boards can be excellent ways of identifying and assessing potential full-time non-academic jobs. New roles should be assessed carefully to determine if they are consistent with your career goals, will advance your professional development, and don’t displace other more important professional or personal activities. Input from mentors, coaches and other advisors can help you identify and evaluate these opportunities, and involving family and friends at the appropriate time will help you make the right decision and a successful transition.
