Conflicts with departmental and institutional leadership and administration are not only distressing for you but are frequently difficult for the leaders involved and the department and institution overall. Depending upon the nature of the conflict, they can also impede your productivity. Knowledge of what types of conflict to expect and how to deal with them is important. These conflicts can also include difficulties in compliance with established policies and procedures. Strategies for dealing with such conflicts should start with having a frank discussion with the leaders with whom you have conflicts. If unsuccessful, you should go to the authority immediately above them. If resolution of the conflict is still not reached, you should seek help from outside the department which may include the office of faculty affairs, human resources/relations (HR), your ombudspersonOmbudsperson, or third-party mediators. Alternatively, it may become advisable to consider requesting a change in your reporting structure. In extreme circumstances, transferring your academic appointment to another department or moving to another institution may be the best option.
