Regardless of your academic track (e.g., tenure-trackTenure-track, clinician-educator), your success as a faculty member will be reflected in your ability to advance through the professorial ranks from assistant to associate and to full professor. Difficulty in doing so may reflect being in the wrong academic track for your interests and abilities, lacking sufficient resources to succeed, not being granted adequate time for academic pursuits, or not being able to adapt to the faculty lifestyle, among others. Sometimes your expectations for advancement may be unrealistic (e.g., believing that you deserve accelerated advancement or promotion when your academic achievements do not support it). Other times your achievements may support such advancement, but you do not have the support of your leadership. Dealing with problems of academic advancement requires that you have knowledge of departmental and institutional policies and procedures to ensure your optimal progression through the ranks.
