Difficult or Poorly Performing Students and Trainees
摘要
As a faculty member, one of your most important missions is to educate. Fortunately, most of the time this is an uplifting experience. However, occasionally you may experience difficulties with your students and trainees. Recognition of such difficulties and understanding how to address them is important. Evaluating the severity of the situation and the potential causes is essential in working toward successful resolution. Most institutions have several resources available to assist you in managing student and trainee issues, and the appropriate choices will vary depending upon the specifics (e.g., academic difficulty, mental health problems, physical impairment). Documentation of the issues and your steps to correct the situation are important, as is providing follow-up and monitoring for the recurrence of the difficulty. Ignoring problems and hoping that they will resolve themselves will likely make the situation worse for you, the student, and your institution.
