As a faculty member, you will interact with many of these individuals throughout your career, in both positive and potentially negative situations. Technically, your leadership consists of anyone who is administratively above you on the organizational chart. This could be a division chief, a department chair, an associate dean, or the dean of your school, the AHC/AMC director or associate directors, and the university leadership, among others. Regardless of the administrative level with which you interact, as a faculty member you should engage them carefully and appropriately. You must be sure to inform and coordinate with those to whom you directly report before pursuing interactions with higher level leaders. This will help you avoid the appearance, if not the reality, of bypassing your bosses or providing messages that conflict with theirs, unless there is justification to do so. Even if the interaction with a higher-level official is arranged by that leader, you should inform your immediate supervisors. Your interactions with leaders and administrators can be very productive if done thoughtfully and respectfully, and if you understand the appropriate boundaries and constraints.
