As a faculty member, one of your most important and meaningful activities is teachingTeaching. There are Interactionswith students and traineesmany venues for education, including the lecture hall, the laboratory, clinical settings, small group discussions, and office hours. Likewise, there are many roles in which you may teach, including as a course director, lecturer, facilitator, clinical supervisor, and research director. Effective interactions with your students and trainees enhance both the teachingTeaching and learning experiences. Regardless of the venue and role, the ways you interact with your students and trainees will often leave more of an impact than what you teach. As a faculty member your words leave long-lasting impressions upon your students, and, accordingly, you must pay close attention to political, cultural, social, and generational sensitivities, as well as individual differences. This sometimes will require updating your vocabulary or terminology. You should also be aware of different expectations and preparation on the part of students based upon their level of learning and experience (e.g., undergraduate students, medical students, other health sciences students, graduate students, interns, residents, fellows and postdoctoral scholars). You also should be mindful of the impact of increased remote learningRemote learning on student social engagement and well-being.
