Even as you are developing your own career, you have the opportunity (and indeed the responsibility) to provide advice and assistance to students, trainees, staff, peers and other colleagues. In addition, you may be asked to review and provide input about programs at your own institution and beyond. Offering guidance and help is a key role for all faculty members. Yet many trainees and faculty lament the lack of career counseling and support they receive. Your advice to others should consider the stage of their career and be tailored to their individual circumstances and needs. There are important distinctions between the roles of mentor, coach and sponsor; each requires specific skill sets and a dedication to helping others. You should decide which (if not all) of these roles best suits your abilities. You will likely find that advising and assisting others is an inspiring and fulfilling part of being a medical schoolMedical school faculty member.
