Medical school faculty members can have many leadership responsibilities such as overseeing their research and clinical programs, directing courses and training programs, chairing committees, and more. However, faculty have varying degrees of leadership skills. Indeed, some faculty will actively pursue formal leadership positions at their own or other institutions, while others will choose not to pursue such roles at all. Still others may ultimately gravitate to leadership posts over time, ranging from residency program director and course director positions to administrative assignments such as division head, vice chair, chair and beyond (e.g., associate dean, dean, provost, president). A variety of leadership training programs are available to you at various stages of your career, including those that may be offered by your institution and those provided by national organizations.
