Resources are finite and must be utilized efficiently. It is incumbent upon you as a faculty member to deploy equipment, space, and staff in cost-effective and innovative ways such as through appropriate use of shared or core resources, optimized contracts and leases, thoughtful use of virtual offices, and cross-training of employees when feasible. Seeking additional funding from new or less conventional sources (e.g., grants, philanthropy, off-site clinical service provision, laboratory service agreements) can be helpful in supporting financial shortfalls. Creation of novel multidisciplinary centers and institutes also may stimulate more intramural and extramural funding for your programs, as well as provide additional facilities. It is important that you understand the differences between resource utilization, which focuses on the efficient use of resources, and resource management, which focuses on the regulation and assignment of resources. Most institutions have offices that oversee both resource management and utilization; interacting effectively with their staff and becoming familiar with their policies and procedures can help your programs and performance.
