As you pursue your role as a faculty member, you will create, help develop, and oversee programs that align with your goals and job responsibilities. Throughout your career, you must maintain and enhance your programs so that they (and you) are optimally productive. This will require you to develop a strategic plan for success, which includes setting goals and prioritiesPriorities for your programs’ development, creating and implementing a process to achieve your goals and prioritiesPriorities, and developing metrics to document performance. It is essential to evaluate your programs periodically to ensure that they are operating optimally. Although you should be guided by your strategic plan, you should be ready to modify it and change your tactics if a change would improve outcomes. Effective strategic plans are fluid and should be modified to meet current challenges, changing assumptions, and unanticipated opportunities. In so doing, it is important that you engage all the members of your teams. The success of your programs will depend upon the commitment, engagement, and productivityProductivity of your teams. Be sure to keep institutional leaders, especially those to whom you report, apprised of your progress and inform them of any problematic issues as well as successes and external recognitionRecognition of your activities.
