Sociological Perspective on Strategy Tools for the VUCA Environment: A Systematic Literature Review
摘要
As most companies operate in extremely turbulent environments and considering that strategic management is referred to as having several limitations in these contexts, the need arises to identify the strategy tools (ST) that can operate effectively in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environments. A systematic literature review (SLR) was undertaken, covering the period from 1990 to 2021, in the search for scientific articles identifying ST for the VUCA environment. The concept of VUCA first appeared in the 1990s. It is an acronym for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, seeking to describe the turbulent and chaotic environment that most companies operate in. Several authors have highlighted the impact of this environment on strategic management. It is also widely agreed that ST play an essential role in strategic management. Using the right ST could help companies avoid strategic disasters in such challenging environments. The ST toolkit identified appears to be incomplete, unbalanced and conservative. Although the VUCA world and strategic management have been interconnected for at least three decades, information on how companies should select strategy tools in a multidimensional perspective (stages of the strategic process vs. VUCA components) is limited. This SLR is aimed at identifying the strategy tools that are appreciated through the sociological view (researchers) for the present context, have an ST selection support matrix and allow specialists in strategic management to reflect on strategic practices.
