Social work education faces a significant theory-practice divide often due to the complex and abstract nature of theoretical concepts. This disconnect is present in the literature with hostility expressed toward theory due to its perceived irrelevance to practice. Theories are often taught without consideration of their practical application, which results in student frustration and disinterest. Aligning theoretical instruction with practicum placements, using case-based learning, and integrating coursework with real-world scenarios are some of the ways to address this issue. Experiential learning methods along with reflective and critical pedagogy can also make theory more accessible and, in turn, improve educational outcomes and practice skills.
