Oppression finds life through various forms of communication, and while social work traffics in language and communication, training and empirical attention deconstructing various forms of communication beyond language practices is not common. Utilizing Critical Discourse Studies, which includes as communication written and spoken language, multimedia, visual communication, body language, and beyond, the following activities can be effectively situated in diversity courses or electives that center around work with marginalized populations (e.g., Queer communities). These discourse activities hold the greatest impact for social work students in moving beyond nominally identifying acts of bias and oppression (e.g., microaggressions) and into examining how these harms occur in and through communication. Three activities are offered here.
