This chapter focuses on four concepts fundamental to social work, namely social work history, values, ethics, and human rights. To understand how and why the profession came into existence, we must interrogate the global, regional, and local history of our profession. Given that many find history quite boring, educators need to use teaching methods that pique student interest. Values, ethics, and human rights are embedded in social work history. In fact, teaching the history of social work is teaching human rights, values, and ethics, which can also be described as the DNA of the profession.
