Social work programs are charged with preparing engaged and socially aware students through skill and knowledge development to effect social change with and on behalf of marginalized and oppressed individuals and communities. Effective teaching is critical to advance this mission; however, consensus on what constitutes effective teaching is nonexistent, and even less agreement can be found on what are the best methods for evaluating teaching. Many programs utilize student evaluations of teaching (SET) as the primary or sole determination, but a substantial body of scholarship has questioned the validity and fairness of SET. In this chapter, alternative activities to evaluate teaching are described.
