Concerns about the climate change and dryness of Urmia Lake have been raised since early 1970s, but the neglect of the surrounding fields and communities in that region is new. For example, salt storms caused by this dryness are an emerging threat for millions of people in north-western Iran. This adds to farmers anxieties about the future, aggravation of drought and an increase in the devastating effects of drought, etc. Despite several water management schemes and restoration plans by Iran’s government, the transformation of these programs into action has been slow and their adoption rates have been low among farm families. Drawing on Ulrich Beck's theory of the world ‘risk society’, this chapter will focus on Lake Urmia in Iran and its surrounding places to demonstrate how climate change together with wrong policies can lead to migration and displacement of farmers.

摘要
