This chapter addresses a dual puzzle central to this study: the significant national variations in how Islam and Muslims are perceived and securitized across Western Europe, despite the region’s economic and political integration since WWII; and the prevailing tendency in security studies to treat the securitization of Islam as a uniform, post-9/11 phenomenon. This chapter identifies critical gaps in existing literature, particularly in the Copenhagen School’s securitization theory, which often neglects historical legacies and national specificities. It introduces the book’s contribution: a comparative analysis of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, incorporating narrative theory and historical depth to demonstrate how distinct national trajectories shape contemporary securitization discourses.
