This study investigates public sentiment on X about “#StopGalamseyNow” movement, which aims to address illegal small-scale mining in Ghana. 1,069 tweets collected between September 1 and October 9, 2024, were subject to sentiment analysis to categorize tweets into positive, neutral, and negative sentiments. The sentiment distribution revealed 46.3%, 27.7% and 26.1% to be negative, neutral and positive respectively, indicating public dissatisfaction and concern about illegal mining activities. The fine-tuned BERT model demonstrated high performance, achieving 99.5% accuracy, with precision, recall, and F1-scores of 96.2%, 97.8%, and 98.1%, respectively. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and advocacy groups in refining strategies to tackle galamsey through public engagement and targeted interventions.
