During the aging process, both physiological and cognitive changes are expected to occur. However, there is little discussion about how these changes manifest in autistic individuals. This study aimed to investigate the current understanding of electroencephalographic (EEG), neural, and cognitive characteristics in elderly autistic individuals. When using the search terms “Elderly, Autism, and EEG,” search engines often direct the search to studies involving children, highlighting a significant gap in research involving the elderly autistic population. Less than 0.4% of studies on autism focus on this age group, according to researchers in the field. We conducted a bibliographic survey using various combinations of keywords such as “Autism Spectrum Disorder, Aging, Elderly, and EEG” on virtual platforms like PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Periódicos Capes, and ResearchGate. Our search yielded 9 articles involving elderly autistic individuals in groups mixed with adults and 7 articles focusing solely on autistic adults. Studies involving elderly individuals reported changes in EEG patterns, morphological alterations in cortical regions, and impairments in attention, visual memory, and fluency. On the other hand, studies with adults highlighted changes in EEG during sleep, gamma band activity, event-related potentials, P100 responses, neural plasticity, and memory. The findings from these studies provide valuable insights that can serve as a foundation for further evaluation and treatment approaches for elderly individuals with autism. However, it is crucial to note the scarcity of research in this area, indicating a significant need for more studies focusing on the elderly autistic population.
