Assessment of Noise Pollution at the 2nd Air Instruction Squadron of the Brazilian Air Force Academy

Sound noise has the potential to impact the physical, mental, and social health of people exposed to certain circumstances. Noise pollution refers to the introduction of noise from various sources, such as road traffic, airplanes, construction machinery, industrial operations, and various household appliances, into the environment. Some studies have demonstrated the feasibility of measuring sound levels using smartphone applications. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the noise levels in the 2nd Air Instruction Squadron, a military environment dedicated to flight instruction for Air Force Academy students. The results demonstrated the accuracy of Xiaomi’s Redmi 7A model smartphones for measuring A-weighted sound levels, showing a divergence of less than 1.5 dBA compared to the accuracy recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Furthermore, it was observed that cadets are not exposed to sound pressure levels greater than 85 dBA for periods longer than 8 h. However, noise pollution can compromise the quality of instruction in the study room.
