Smart Lean Regulation: An Integrated Approach to Efficiently Managing Medical Equipment for Healthcare Companies

Inappropriate storage of medical equipment, without considering regulatory aspects, compromises the integrity and functionality of these devices. The absence of agile and efficient traceability of medical equipment results in delays in maintenance and calibration procedures, consequently reducing the availability of equipment for surgical procedures. Additionally, hospitals face challenges in establishing long-term management methods. The objective of this paper is to propose an integrated approach for managing medical equipment in a healthcare environment, termed Smart Lean Regulation by the authors. Three foundational pillars were identified to underpin this proposal. First, the structuring of the physical storage area is guided by active regulations established by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and quality standards. Second, the Lean Healthcare philosophy was chosen to establish long-term equipment management practices. Third, radio frequency identification technology (RFID) was selected to monitor and track the movement of medical equipment within the healthcare organization.
