COVID-19 is a pathology arising from the SARS-CoV-2 virus that was first reported in China in December 2019. The disease presents several forms of manifestation such as Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF), that causes a reduction in lung capacity, blockage of the responsible paths through the deactivation of pro-fibrotic cells, and removal of the proliferated matrix, leading to lung healing. Post-COVID-19 patients recovering from a hospital stay have low physical conditioning several months after hospital discharge. Therefore, physiotherapy manifests as an indispensable resource in the process of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, adjunct to the treatment of Photobiomodulation (PBM) from a vest with LEDs in the near-infrared. The purpose of the study was to verify the efficacy of the association of PBM with physiotherapeutic rehabilitation in patients with post-COVID-19 Pulmonary Fibrosis, and evaluated by the 6 min Walk Test (6MWT). This is a prospective, descriptive, single-blind study. The cohort consisted of 30 patients with post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis, distributed in three groups of 10 patients each: Sham - physiotherapeutic treatment and LEDs off (placebo), PBM1 – patients with post-COVID-19 PF who received physiotherapy and PBM in the hospital (2020) associated with the physiotherapeutic protocol and PBM, and PBM2 - physiotherapeutic treatment and PBM. PBM was applied for 900 s, with optical power of 6 W, power densities of 2.9 mW/cm2, and energy of 2.6 J/cm2. Consultations were held 2 times/week for 6 weeks. Results showed that the PBM1 group showed a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.0001) in cardiopulmonary recovery when compared to the PBM2 (p = 0.01) and Sham (p = 0.0005) groups; however, comparison between the PBM2 and Sham groups indicated no significant difference, p > 0.05. It is concluded that PBM using near-infrared radiation, associated with physiotherapeutic techniques, showed significant results in the recovery of pulmonary function in patients with PF.
