Study of Bovine Milk Incorporation to Gelatin Scaffold to Induce Skin Healing Process

In some adverse scenarios, the regenerative capacity of the skin might be interrupted. The eventual discontinuation of the cicatrization process might evolve to a chronic wound. The chronic stage is maintained by the deficiency of the collagen natural production, which is caused by the lack of growth factors secretion. Bovine milk is rich with some of the most relevant growth factors for skin healing, such as TGF-β. For that reason, this study had the objective to combine a collagen scaffold, also known as gelatin, with bovine milk to induce the cell migration and stimulate the natural production of collagen, resulting in the wound healing. The bovine milk was incorporated to the gelatin structure by the dip infill technique and the FTIR assay was held to analyze the new scaffold. The scaffold was submitted to morphological evaluation with SEM observation and to cytotoxicity and cell migration assays with Vero cell’s culture. The cells were quantified by MTT test, and observed by the analysis with inverted light microscopy. Despite the bovine milk dissolution in culture caused mechanical competition with the cells, the scaffold developed with new chemical structure did not show cytotoxicity related and induced cell migration, which indicates the potential induction capacity for natural collagen production and therapeutic alternatives for chronic wounds healing process.
