Development of a Shape Memory Nitinol Tracheal Stent for Veterinary Medicine

This article addresses the development of a nitinol stent intended for dogs with mechanical ventilation obstruction. The stent is designed to maintain airway patency, facilitating proper breathing for dogs affected by respiratory disorders caused by tracheal obstructions. The research focuses on creating an effective solution for cases where respiratory obstruction compromises the animals’ quality of life, proposing a minimally invasive intervention with reduced recovery time. For the construction of the stent, nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy, was chosen due to its mechanical properties of shape memory, superelasticity, and biocompatibility. A weaving process was designed by the authors to arrange a nitinol wire into a cylindrical mesh, a characteristic structure of a stent. Three stents were fabricated following this procedure, which was accompanied by heat treatment for shape memory acquisition. In order to assess their effectiveness, the stents were then subjected to a set of radial resistance tests, whose results were critically evaluated pursuing better understanding regarding the stents’ mechanical properties. With this knowledge, it is possible not only to check whether the prototype met the basic requirements, but also to plan the next steps of this continuous development. Through further studies, the Bioengineering Division of Adib Jatene Foundation aims to achieve an implantable nitinol tracheal stent that can successfully enhance the quality of life of dogs suffering from respiratory disorders caused by tracheal obstructions, hopefully extending their life expectancy.
