This chapter introduces the scope, background, and research questions at the heart of this book. It provides definitions of my key terms; explains the original taxonomy I created and use as the framework of my discussion of gynoid and female-presenting AI within live-action US and UK feature-length films. It presents how the concepts of derivatisation, fable and myth, and a technofeminist lens allow me to analyse the characters within my scope of films. By considering their production context, existing science fiction (SF) and filmic trends, production type, expectations for women, and their contemporary and subsequent technologies, I argue that there is a fabular version of femininity, appealed to and shaped by these characters, that has become a part of SF’s mythos, but is changing and shifting away from passive, submissive depictions towards more agentic figures, foretelling and confirming the why and how real female artificial creations are made and used.

摘要
