Patterns and Projection of Public Healthcare Facilities in the Kashmir Division of North-West Himalayas Using Geospatial Technology

Equitable accessibility to public healthcare facilities (HCF) is critical for healthy communities and societies. However, factors like physical barriers and uneven spatial distribution of the HCFs devoid people from availing these services. This has become many-fold with the stress of the growing population, making it more difficult to ensure affordable and quality healthcare services to all sections of society. The present study analyzes the spatial accessibility and pattern of HCFs in a district-wise manner for the Kashmir Division using geospatial techniques and also the population–HCF projection for the years 2021, 2031, and 2041, taking 2011 as the base year. Service of HCFs based on travel time (minutes) and travel distance (km) using the road network was prepared for each district. The Average Neighbor Ratio (0.643) depicts a highly clustered pattern of HCFs with a high statistical significance of such a spatial clustering (P-value < 0; Z-score = − 25.795). The central HCF, which is the most accessible from all directions, came out to be the Sub-center (SC) Bather located in the Budgam District. None of the districts, except Bandipore, have the District Hospital serving as the central HCF. Overall kernel density of the HCFs ranged from 0 to 0.647 per km2 with Srinagar District having the highest density of all. In addition, the future requirement of new HCFs in proportion to the growing population from the years 2021 to 2041 was also computed using two methods i.e geometric and exponential projection. Results using both projection methods reveal the highest increase in the new HCFs for the Anantnag and Kupwara districts both having more than 420 HCFs by the end of 2041.
