Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are one of the most significant natural disasters in the fragile terrain of Himachal Pradesh, India. The state is facing a multitude of changes which include changes in the climate, i.e., increasing temperature and decreasing annual rainfall in the already varied geomorphology of the state. This results in the rapid melting of the glaciers which further results in the expansion of pre-existing glacial lakes and formation of new lakes in the study area. Along with that, the state is facing a surge of population rise which is further increasing the overall vulnerability of the state. Past events of GLOF within the state, i.e., the 2005, Kinnaur district GLOF event which was caused by the bursting of the Pareechu Lake. This event caused massive destruction within the district. Therefore, there is a need to study holistically the risk of GLOF within the study area. Emphasizing the intricacy of the risk factors involved, the interaction between faster glacier melt, climatic changes, and human activities like infrastructure development. This study focuses on providing a holistic overview of the GLOF disaster in Himachal Pradesh. It specifically discusses the glacial lakes in the state, the factors that lead to the formation of glacial lakes and the occurrence of GLOF, and potential mitigation strategies that can be used to lessen the adverse impacts of the disaster on society.
