The forest ecosystem plays a pivotal role in providing essential ecosystem services and supporting local livelihood options. However, these forests are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which are already altering their structure and function. This study focuses on the Kinnaur District, Himachal Pradesh within the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) to assess the decadal change in forest cover, change in climatic variables, and experience sharing of local communities regarding climate change impacts on forests. Using a combination of analysis of satellite data and perception surveys conducted from 2017 to 2019, this research examines trends in forest cover and climatic variables. A report from the Forest Survey of India reveals a fluctuating trend in forest cover dynamics, with noticeable changes in dense and open forest areas over the past two decades. Climatic trend analysis highlights significant increases in winter, pre-monsoon, and post-monsoon temperatures, alongside a decrease in winter precipitation. The perception survey among 250 households across 18 villages in Kinnaur District underscores a strong awareness among local communities of climate change impacts on forests. Respondents observed changes such as declining forest area, reduced water availability from streams, and increased frequency of extreme weather events. These perceptions align with scientific findings indicating shifts in seasonal patterns and ecological disruptions affecting flora and fauna. Integrating local perceptions with scientific data is essential for developing context-specific adaptation policies that enhance the resilience of forest communities in the fragile Himalayan landscapes.
