The impact of big data technology on the Italian administrative system can be examined from two different perspectives. The first concerns the public regulation of the release and use of digital technologies on the market in general. The second perspective focuses on the rules and conditions for the use of technological solutions in the exercise of public functions and the provision of public services. The debate in law and political science has mainly focused on the first perspective, also because of the still limited experience with the automation of administrative procedures in the Italian system. Therefore, the chapter first takes account of developments in the debate on the broader regulation of big tech. Then, it reviews the debate on certain critical profiles relevant to the application of digital technologies to administrative activity.
