Much discovery was set in motion during the Galilean age of the seventeenth/eighteenth century, not only in the sky above, but also on the earth below. Medicine evolved from humoral pathology, which held that “disorders in the fluids of the body, especially the blood, are the basic factors in disease,” to a science and experimental-based medicine. It was at that time that the precursor of one of the products, regarded now as a medical device was invented—the medical thermometer.
