Laënnec. The Extendable Ear
摘要
In one of the Harry Potter books, Fred and George Weasley created “Extendable Ears.” We “Muggles,” instead, have the stethoscope first described by René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laënnec in 1819. Perhaps he invented it from a dislike of touching the patient or out of a sense of decency, since he would have to have put his ear to a lady’s breast. Now the stethoscope is a status symbol of the medical profession. The basic idea for this revolutionary invention may have come to Laënnec while watching a children’s game.
