Technical Challenges of UAVs-Assisted Free Space Optical Communication in Some Regions of Ukraine

Tasks related to monitoring the earth’s surface and subsequent transmission of online video information play an important role nowadays. In this case, online monitoring is most often carried out by UAVs-assisted. The UAVs are equipped with the necessary monitoring equipment, to receive and transmit video information. However, the tasks are often complicated by the fact that the transmitted video information must be reliably protected. Often, the methods of transmitting information via radio channels cannot provide guaranteed protection due to the possibility of interception of the transmitted information. In this case, free-space optical communication (FSO) can be used as an alternative method of transmitting online video data. This method has features as well as limitations related to the properties of visible light propagation in space. The purpose of this work is to analyze the influence of meteorological conditions in a certain region of Ukraine on the possibilities of using FSO communications. The mathematical models that allow us to estimate the influence of atmospheric phenomena on the scattering and attenuation of optical signals are considered. Meteorological data for the last years are analyzed. Characteristic types of clouds that are typical for each season in the specified region are highlighted. The main meteorological factors that have a significant impact on the possibilities of using FSO in a given region are described. Recommendations for minimizing the negative impact of the atmosphere on the possibilities of using FSO communications are given. The analysis and recommendations can be effectively used in the future for modelling and creating FSO communications for online monitoring in other regions.
