Otosclerosis is a bone disease of the middle ear and inner ear. People with otosclerosis have problems with hearing and sometimes with balance. For a patient with a history suggestive of otosclerosis, it is reasonable to check several auditory and vestibular tests and (depending on those results) a temporal bone CT. In patients with otosclerosis who have hearing loss, some find a hearing aid to be helpful. If a hearing aid is not helpful, then an otolaryngologist may offer surgery for otosclerosis.
