Vibration-induced nystagmus (VIN) refers to horizontal jerk nystagmus elicited by applying vibration to various locations on the head (usually the sternocleidomastoid). Modest, symmetrical VIN can appear in normal individuals. Large or very asymmetrical VIN is more likely to reflect pathology, the most common of which is vestibular weakness (on the side opposite the direction of the fast phase of the nystagmus). The mechanism of VIN is unclear.
