The labyrinth comprises several “compartments” filled with fluids of different compositions and with different patterns of flow. There are connections between the labyrinth and the intracranial space. A variety of conditions can change intracranial pressure, and those pressure changes can get transmitted to the labyrinth. Thus, intracranial pressure fluctuations can cause intralabyrinthine pressure fluctuations, which in turn can cause temporary or permanent changes in hearing.
