Campus planning responded to the needs at the time, forces such as increasing population, advancement of technology, and change in the structure of instruction influenced planning decisions. At a time, when environmental sustainability is mainstreaming, higher education institutions across the globe are increasingly and consistently integrating the concept into the campus plan, development, and operations. The inability of a campus to accommodate growth, change, and future needs is regarded in the absence of coherent campus planning. Therefore, it is necessary to formulate a planning process that will serve as a foundation for universities and colleges with environmental sustainability (ES) as the focus. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila, is currently undergoing developments to accommodate the changes and demands of its community. To ensure the sustainable use of its land and resources, the university must adopt a planning process that fosters positive environmental health with the flexibility to accommodate future needs, is resilient to climate change, and promotes placemaking. The analysis is focused on the integration of environmental sustainability strategies into the planning process and physical development of PUP. It also looked at concepts that support the objectives of the study. The study is qualitative and data is gathered through interviews, focus group discussions, site visitations, and literature review. Results were analyzed and synthesized to draw out the campus planning process with concepts and strategies contextualized to respond to local context and conditions. Planning starts with the integration of the environmental sustainability component into the formulation of the mission and vision statement of the institution, as this is the backbone of the planning and development of a campus, and ends with the monitoring and evaluation stage, contrary to what has often been assumed, that planning process, ends at the implementation stage. Overall, this study provides a development of campus planning process and strategies toward environmental sustainability, tailored to the PUP’s local context.
