The development of cities in the United Arab Emirates has led to bespoke management solutions for archaeological heritage. In addition to technical excavation and site conservation efforts, in some cases, an economic potential has been explored and aims at a commodified public use. Results depend on multiple factors, starting with the nature and the condition of the remains, as well as their articulation with city infrastructures. The recent and fast expansion of the built environment in the UAE yields a civic interest in preserving historical urban tangibles but simultaneously constrains the technical options for doing so. This paper seeks to comparatively apply this reasoning to selected examples in different emirates.
