In this chapter, we examine the cultural foundations of stigma related to substance use, emphasizing the influence of social determinants of health. We highlight key analytical categories, particularly gender. The recursive production of gendered roles, where women are positioned as caregivers, family members, and drug users, leads to specific forms of burden and stigmatization due to societal gender expectations. The media plays a critical role in reproducing social perceptions of drug use and women, further reinforcing stigma. However, media can also be leveraged as a tool to reduce social stigma. Therefore, it is essential to engage with the media critically to mitigate the impact of stigmatization on family members.
