Big Data Analytics in Healthcare: Challenges and Advancements

Big data analytics has a major impact on patient health outcomes, resource use, understanding disease patterns, and enhancing the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment of diseases making it an essential tool in the healthcare industry despite these benefits, big data analytics has serious challenges in the healthcare setting. This systematic literature review aims to highlight the challenges in big data analytics for healthcare, assess the advantages of using big data analytics in healthcare, and analyze what strategies can be developed to reduce the gap between the application of data-driven decision-making and traditional medical practices. This systematic literature review included high-quality journal articles based on the keyword query created by the Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases spanning the period from 2013 to 2023. The study finding reveals that patient data security and privacy, the complexity of medical data, and the volume of data are major challenges while enhanced diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning, efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and advancements in medical research and drug discovery as benefits to the use of big data analytic to the healthcare setting. We hope that the results of the study will provide guidance to healthcare managers and decision-makers in the healthcare industry about the utilization of big data analytics in the healthcare environment and to develop stronger strategies using big data analytics.
