Examining the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety of University Students in the Classroom Environment with Different Variables

Determination of the foreign language speaking anxiety of university students in the classroom environment by comparing them with different variables is the aim of this study. Also, in this study general survey model was used. The study group of the research consists of university students in Northern Cyprus. In the study, a survey form developed by the researchers was used to collect data. The SPSS24 program was used for analyzing the data obtained in the study were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, and Chi-Square tests. In conclusion, the students stated that their self-confidence in the lesson would decrease if they felt anxious when speaking a foreign language in the classroom. Students mentioned that They expressed concerns about making errors when speaking a foreign language, that negative experiences affect them, that they get excited while speaking a foreign language, and that their anxiety about speaking a foreign language affects them negatively. On the contrary, they also stated that they liked foreign language lessons. University students’ anxiety about speaking a foreign language in the classroom varies depending on their perceived level of foreign language knowledge. Students with poor or moderate foreign language proficiency have more anxiety about speaking a foreign language in the classroom.
