Kidney Injury Caused by Marine Toxins

Climate change and warming of the seas have produced a proliferation of jellyfish, physalia, and anemones with a high anaphylactic power and that can produce hemolysis. The toxins of these aquatic species, such as domoic acid, pallidotoxin, maitotoxin, and cniradian toxin can cause coagulation disorders, complement activation, hemolysis, rhabdomyolysis, vasoconstriction with decreased renal flow, and acute tubular necrosis that eventually lead to acute kidney injury and hemolytic uremic syndrome.
