This book is about refugees, their treatment, and encountering with music and music therapy. It is based on psychodynamic and psychoanalytic understanding of trauma, music, therapy, and refugees (e.g. Ahonen-Eerikäinen, 2007; Akhtar, 1995, 2018; Alanne, 2010, 2014, 2019, 2023; Alayarian, 2024; Bruscia, 1998; De Backer & Sutton, 2014; Lemma, 2006; Priestley, 1975; Salberg, 2024; Saraneva, 2002, 2018; Strehlow & Hannibal, 2019; Stubley, 2022; Volkan, 2018a, 2018b). However, it has an integrative approach of discussing also other current trauma and neuropsychiatric theories relating music, music therapy, and psychoanalysis (Beck, 2019: Castaneda et al., 2018; Rose, 2004; Sokira et al., 2023; Solms & Turnbull, 2002/2018; van der Kolk, 2014). Especially, the phase-oriented approach of trauma work by Judith Herman (1992/2022) that is often applied in music therapy and in psychodynamic psychotherapy like at the Tavistock Clinic, UK, is forming the ground for the clinical theory for the therapy and other music-related work in this book.
