In the last 30 years in Italy, the number of Sikh places of worship has grown very quickly. Within the various local contexts, the presence of gurdwaras in the public space has challenged the common perception of Italy being a uniformly Catholic country. This chapter analyses their role and characteristics, in relation to the specificities of the various local Sikh communities and to the broader political debate on immigration and religious pluralism in Italy. Starting from a case study, the gurdwaras are analysed as places of ambivalent and contradictory integration within local territories. Furthermore, the chapter analyses the main difficulties encountered by Sikhs in having their religion recognized by Italian institutions, as well as the consequences from the point of view of religious identity, authority and organization that this process entails.
